UCP Business Development Center to Redesign Space

(WILSON, NC – June 20, 2017)

The Upper Coastal Plain Development Corporation Board of Directors on Tuesday night unanimously approved the budget for the BDC of $225,000 for the fiscal year 2017-2018 which begins on July 1st.  What’s exciting about this is that included in the budget is a new line-item of $25,000 for the renovation of about 3000 square feet of space that will cater to the millennial generation ages 13-38 in the structure of “co-working space”.

After extensive research, this small redesign will transform the BDC into what The Kenan Institute at UNC called in a 2015 study, “creative spaces” also known as “co-working spaces”.  We have discovered that millennials choose to work alongside like-minded people. They prefer working in an open space where they can work collaboratively with flexibility, cost-effectively, and network with others.

The City of Wilson is rich in the Arts among its many assets. The revitalization of downtown Wilson is a big plus for the community. In addition to the re-design of the floor space, management seeks to work with partners in the arts community to add colorful art to the decor and have the working space be more enticing and attractive.

Co-working space is an area designed without walls and just open space to include tables with utility hook-ups, casual furniture, whiteboards and big screen monitors. A phone room for confidential conversations and a video room for greenscreen, podcasting, viewing and recording programs will be provided. We hope to complete the redesign by the fall 2017.

“This open space environment will foster innovation and creativity.” It is hoped this strategy will attract students from Barton College, Wilson Community College and the three high schools in Wilson County.
